I wanted to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their support of our new Success Tutorials this year. The feedback from students, parents, and staff as to the value of offering a ST’s has been very positive. I believe our students really enjoy the ability to choose how they will spend this 38 minute period once a week if they are not assigned to a Closed Tutorial. The academic support, enrichment, and variety of offerings have been a very positive addition to our program.
Since Success Tutorials are new to us, we continue to refine the sign-up procedures to make it work better for students, parents, and staff. We know the process has been far from perfect and thank you for your patience. While we see how valuable Success Tutorials are and can be for students, it takes a significant amount of organization to account for each of our 1,070 students every Wednesday - making sure all students are assigned or sign up for a ST. We are looking at different options including working with a software company and school who uses Tutorials in a similar way to help us manage our sign-up and accounting tasks in a more effective and user-friendly way. Until then, we are using a rather complex Google spreadsheet to organize everything.
Every School Day Counts
Your Child's Success In School and Beyond - Planning Vacations and Family Trips
Please be mindful that in 2014-15 our school district will be fully implementing the Common Core State Standards, a rigorous set of standards designed to ensure that all students are successful participants in the world of the 21st Century. The Common Core State Standards establish clear, consistent guidelines for what every student should know and be able to do in math and English language arts from kindergarten through 12th grade.
Because of this shift in education, it is more important than ever that students be physically present in the classroom for instruction. Classroom instruction supports inquiry and discovery, reliance on multiple resources, and continuous assessment. Much of the work focuses on students applying concepts to real world situations. The learning is active and interactive. When students are absent, they miss significant learning opportunities that cannot be “covered” through packet work.
Please be mindful of this when planning trips during the school year. Time spent away from the classroom will significantly impact your student’s progress and academic achievement. That is time and experience they can ill afford to lose.
The standards were drafted by experts and teachers from across the country and are designed to ensure students are prepared for today’s entry-level careers, freshman-level college courses, and workforce training programs. The Common Core focuses on developing the critical-thinking, problem-solving, and analytical skills students will need to be successful.
The new standards also provide a way for teachers to measure student progress throughout the school year and ensure that students are on the pathway to success in their academic careers.(http://www.corestandards.org/what-parents-should-know/)
As you plan vacations and trips, please refer to the district's instructional calendar. Have a wonderful summer and thank you for your continued support of the Iron Horse Middle School community.
