NEW STUDENT Enrollment for the 2015-16 School Year:

Enrollment for the 2015-16 School Year:

**If your child is currently a 5th grader at Bollinger Canyon, Golden View, Montevideo or Twin Creeks Elementary School, you do not need to enroll at Iron Horse.  These elementary schools are feeder schools to Iron Horse so your child is automatically in our 2015-16 enrollment.  You will need to do the annual update that the district sends out over the summer.  This is to update your contact information in the districts database.

  •          Enrollment for the 2015-16 school year opens on March 1, 2015
  •          To enroll, log-on to the district website and complete the on-line application (http://www.srvusd.net/enrollyourchild)
  •          After completing the on-line application, please make an appointment with Iron Horse and bring your required documents to your scheduled appointment. Click here to schedule your appointment http://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0e4caba62fa7fd0-newstudent

** Please note that if you are enrolling for the current school year (2014-15) call the counseling office at (925) 790-2580 to make an immediate appointment to enroll.

Principal's Message

Dear Jaguar Community:

As we approach June, I am amazed at how quickly this year has passed. We have had an exciting year of many firsts here at Iron Horse. Among them, we have seen our students take the new state tests, the CAASPP (California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress). We also created a bell schedule over a year ago that integrated a modified block schedule with a once a week Success Tutorial period.  This was designed to help us provide more differentiated teaching and learning – all in the interests of educating our students to the best of our ability as they prepare for high school and beyond.

CAASPP Results Reports:  It will look different!

We anticipate parents will receive your child’s CAASPP report during the upcoming summer. With the new test comes a new way of reporting the results. Earlier this spring, I had a chance to present at our PTA Parent Education Night some of the changes to the way results will be reported. There will be very significant changes when you see the report. The temptation will be to view it like the STAR reports, but I encourage us all to not do that – it would do a disservice to your students and our schools. Here is a video webinar of the presentation for your viewing. (In the webinar I reference an upcoming presentation at our PTA Parent Ed Night – that event has already passed).

Changes to our Bell Schedule for 2015-16

For the past quarter or so, our staff has been assessing, reflecting, and discussing the changes to our bell schedule structure that we made going into 2014-15. One of the best things about working with this staff is their willingness to assess and adjust our practices and structures to best support students. The most important lesson we learned this year is that our Success Tutorials, a once a week 36 minute period, was a success.  We are convinced Success Tutorials need to be more frequent than once a week. Success Tutorial is a structure designed to support our practices to teach all students essential skills in each class.  At the same time this provides students an opportunity to exercise a measure of self-efficacy over their learning.

As a result, we will be re-purposing minutes from our Advisory periods to be used towards a schedule that includes two per week 30-minute Success Tutorials during our 2015-16 school year. The Success Tutorials will be on Tuesday and Thursday. The bell schedule for 2015-16 can be viewed here. We will be going away from the modified block schedule. We believe that a two Success Tutorial schedule will be the structure we need to support all Iron Horse students to learn at high levels. I want to thank the students, staff, and parents who have participated in the committee work that led to this new bell schedule. This includes our School Site Council, PTA, IHMSEF, Student Climate Committee, Tutorial Team, and Bell Schedule committee.

As always, thank you for your continued support and participation as a school community. If you should have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me here at Iron Horse or through email (jnguyen@srvusd.net).

Iron Horse Middle School Named 2015 CA Gold Ribbon School!

It is with great excitement that I announce that Iron Horse Middle School was acknowledged by the State of California and the State Superintendent, Tom Torlakson, as a "Gold Ribbon School".  Due to the consistent efforts of the Jaguar staff, parents/guardians, and especially the students... this recognition is proof of what can be achieved by a supportive and hard working community.

I want to personally thank the students, staff and parents who were involved in not only the application process, but the dedication it took to even be eligible for such an award.

I am always aware of the wonderful things that happen on this campus... now the rest of you can share in my pride.

Congratulations Jaguars!

Sincerely,

Joe Nguyen
Principal
